For every new message you receive, you get a WhatsApp notification in the form of sounds and banners that appears at the top of your screen. You can also be notified by badge counter which hangs on your WhatsApp icon. In some devices, badge counter appears as asterisks (*) and on other devices as figures showing the number of unopened chats you have.

When there’s an incoming voice call or video call you also get notified with banners and alerts and if you miss a call you’ll also get a WhatsApp notification. These WhatsApp notifications are to keep you notified when you have new updates on WhatsApp, they can be turned on and turned off depending on your preference, you can also set WhatsApp notification to only vibrations.
HOW TO SET UP WHATSAPP NOTIFICATION
To receive whatsapp notifications ensure that you have already given whatsapp permission to get notified from your phone settings. Follow these steps to enable these features
- Launch WhatsApp
- Tap on options (3 vertical dots at the top right corner)
- Tap settings
- Navigate notifications and tap on it
- Then set notification to your preference
Whatsapp notifications are automatically on and can be manually switched off by following the above steps. Your default WhatsApp notification tone for private chats, group chats, voice calls, and video calls are your device notification tone.
WHATSAPP NOTIFICATION POPUP
Whatsapp notification popup allows you to reply a chat without necessarily opening the app. Whenever a message enters a popup will appear, you can use this popup to reply messages. To turn on notification popup do the following
- Launch WhatsApp then tap on the three vertical dots at the top right of your screen
- Tap settings
- Navigate and tap notifications
- On message notification category tap on popup notification and choose always show popup
Popup style differs according to devices you can also choose to turn off popup or choose other popup options from the popup notification menu
