
Twitter is again expanding it hates speech policies. The company updated it rules to “prohibit language that dehumanizes people on the basis of race, ethnicity, or national origin”
The change comes more than two years after Twister first said it intended to ban dehumanizing and more than six months from the last change to the policy, which banned hate speech related to age, disability and disease.
Under the last rues, Twitter will require users to delete tweets with harsh and dehumanizing languages targeting people base on their race, ethnicity or national origin. The company will monitor tweets reported by users, and use automation technology to “proactively’ detect potential violation. Twitter has cited research that links dehumanizing language to offline violence.
Twitter says this isn’t reluctance but its desire to get things right. The company notes that it works wit outside groups takes feedback from the public before implementing changes in order to “expend our understanding of cultural nuances and ensure we are able to enforce our rules consistently.
